Welkom Salon Windows

This Welkom salon wanted privacy at street level without losing natural light or the clean look of the shopfront. We supplied frosted window film and branded graphics that gave the windows a tidy finish and made the business easier to spot from the road.

Beauty shopfronts need privacy and presence

The client was a beauty business in Welkom working from a street facing unit with large front windows and side panes. Customers could see into the treatment area from the pavement which was not ideal for privacy, and the owners also wanted the frontage to look more polished and professional for walk in traffic.

For a salon, the windows do a lot of work. They must let in light for the interior, protect the feel of the space, and still carry enough branding for people driving past in town to notice the premises. In Welkom, where summer heat and glare can be strong, frosted film also helps soften the direct sun and makes the interior more comfortable during the day.

  • Client type: beauty salon
  • Town: Welkom, Free State
  • Main need: privacy plus street facing branding
  • Surface types: front windows and side glazing

The brief and the practical constraints

The brief was simple on paper but quite specific in practice. The salon wanted the lower half of the main windows frosted for privacy, with a clean branded strip that would still show the name and service offering from outside. They asked for something neat, durable and easy to keep clean, because salon windows pick up fingerprints, dust and product overspray fairly quickly.

There were also a few site constraints. The windows faced direct afternoon sun, the shopfront sits on a busy street with regular pedestrian movement, and the installation had to be done around trading hours so the business could keep operating. We also had to work carefully around existing tint and handle cut outs, so the graphics would sit properly and not lift on the edges.

  • Need for privacy without darkening the shop too much
  • Readable branding from road and pavement distance
  • Clean finish around handles and frame edges
  • Installation planned around business hours

What we supplied for the windows

We prepared a matched set of frosted vinyl and printed branding elements for the front and side windows. The frosting was used as a privacy layer across the lower viewing line, while the printed graphics carried the salon name, core services and contact prompt. The look was kept light and tidy, with enough contrast to stand out but not so much that it would make the windows feel busy.

Our production team set up the artwork, checked the letter sizes for readability, and cut each element to suit the glazing measurements on site. The graphics were laminated where needed for extra wear resistance, which matters on a salon frontage that gets regular cleaning. The film was sized to fit the panes accurately, with allowances for frame lines and the door opening.

  • Frosted privacy film for lower window sections
  • Printed branding and service wording for visibility
  • Cut vinyl lettering for crisp edges
  • Protective lamination on exposed printed sections

Production and fitting over two weeks

The job ran over two weeks from first site measure to final sign off. In week one we carried out the site survey in Welkom, took the window dimensions, confirmed the placement of each graphic and finalised the artwork layout. The client wanted the frontage to remain bright, so we tested the balance between frosted coverage and open glass before production started.

In week two we produced the film and graphics, then returned for installation. The surfaces were cleaned properly before application because salon glass often has invisible product residue that can affect adhesion. Once the panels were aligned, the graphics were squeegeed down, trimmed where required and checked from inside and outside for bubbles or edge lift. The final result was neat, and the windows looked more organised without making the salon feel closed in.

  • Week 1: site survey and artwork setup
  • Week 2: production, installation and handover
  • Surface preparation done before every panel went up
  • Final checks completed from both sides of the glass

Why the finished frontage works for a salon

The biggest improvement was privacy. Clients can now sit or wait near the front area without feeling exposed to passers by, and the business keeps a lighter interior than it would with full opaque coverage. The branding also gives the shopfront more order and makes it easier for new customers to recognise the premises at a glance.

For a salon, this kind of window treatment does more than decorate the glass. It supports the customer experience by making the space feel private, cared for and businesslike. It also helps with everyday wear, because the frosted section hides scuffs and smudges better than plain glass. In a town like Welkom, where the sun can be hard on shopfronts, that practical benefit is just as useful as the visual one.

  • Better privacy for treatment and waiting areas
  • Cleaner looking frontage from street level
  • Improved visibility for walk in traffic
  • Less obvious marking from fingerprints and dust

What we would repeat on the next job

If we were doing this again for another salon, we would keep the same approach: measure carefully, keep the frosted coverage balanced, and design the branding so it stays legible without crowding the glass. That method suits beauty businesses, nail bars and hair studios where privacy and presentation need to sit together.

We would also continue to use materials that handle frequent cleaning and strong sunlight well. On Free State shopfronts, that matters. A window graphic must hold its edge through heat, dust and everyday wiping, otherwise it starts looking tired far too quickly. This install showed that a modest amount of frosting and well placed branding can change the feel of a frontage without major structural work.

  • Use measured frosting rather than full coverage
  • Keep wording short for quick street read
  • Choose film that stands up to regular cleaning
  • Plan installation around trading hours where possible

Welkom window branding for nearby towns too

Although this project was for Welkom, the same type of salon window work is common across the region. We supply and install sign and graphic work for businesses in Mangaung, Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, Kroonstad and surrounding Free State towns. Whether the job is for a beauty room, a retail unit or a clinic front, the priorities are usually the same: privacy, clarity and a finish that lasts.

Central Signs works from our Hamilton base in Bloemfontein and handles site surveys, artwork setup, vinyl cutting, print production and installation across the area. For window frosting, shop signs, decals and other front of house graphics, we keep things practical and tidy from first measure to final wipe down.

Questions we get asked

Can frosted window film still let in enough light for a salon?

Yes. Frosting softens the view into the room while still allowing natural light through, which is useful for salons that want privacy without making the space feel dark.

Can you work around existing tint or shopfront fittings?

In most cases, yes. We measure around handles, frames and any existing film so the new graphics sit properly and do not interfere with daily use.

How long does a window branding job like this take?

This project took two weeks from site survey to installation, which is a fair turnaround when artwork needs to be measured, produced and fitted carefully.
