Westdene Cafe Signage

A Westdene food outlet needed signage that was easy to read from the street, held up in the sun, and still looked neat at close range. We supplied the exterior sign, menu boards and pavement display package from our Bloemfontein base for a clean front of house finish.

A small street front with a busy brief

The client was a neighbourhood food outlet in Westdene, Bloemfontein, trading in a street where customers come past on foot, by car, and sometimes only spot the shop at the last second. The brief was straight forward on paper, but practical in the real world: a clear exterior sign, menu boards that could be changed without fuss, and a pavement display that could stand up to wind, dust and daily handling.

The frontage had limited wall space and a lot of competing visual noise from nearby businesses, parked vehicles and passing traffic. The owners wanted something tidy and readable, not cluttered, and the signage had to suit the outlet’s style without making the shopfront feel cramped. We also had to work around trading hours so the installation would not interrupt service, which is common in Westdene where lunch and early evening trade matter most.

What the site needed to deal with

Before any production started, we carried out a site survey to check mounting points, wall condition, viewing distance and the best height for legibility. The wall surface had uneven sections and a few older fixings left behind from previous signage, so the install plan had to allow for proper alignment and clean anchoring. The owner also asked for signage that would still read well in bright Free State sun and under late afternoon glare.

There were three main constraints:

  • Limited wall width for the main exterior sign
  • High foot traffic near the entrance, so the pavement display had to be stable
  • Menu content that could change, meaning the layout needed practical inserts rather than a hard sealed face

We kept the layout simple and used strong contrast for the lettering so the information could be read quickly from a few metres away. That matters with food outlets, because most people decide in seconds whether they are stopping or moving on.

The package we supplied

The job included the main exterior sign, interior menu boards and a pavement display unit. We handled artwork setup, a logo redraw where needed, print production, vinyl cutting, lamination, fabrication and final installation. The menu boards were designed in sections so pricing and specials could be updated without replacing the whole board every time, which saves money over time.

For the exterior sign we used a weather suitable board with printed and laminated graphics for colour protection. The finish was chosen to cope with Bloemfontein dust and regular cleaning. The pavement display was made as a movable unit with enough weight for stability, but still manageable for staff to bring in after trading hours. It had to be practical, not just neat.

  • Main fascia sign for street visibility
  • Three menu boards for the ordering area
  • Pavement display for daily specials and promos
  • Cut vinyl lettering for headings and key messages
  • Protective laminate for easier cleaning and longer wear

Production details that made it work

Because food outlets see constant handling and cleaning, we paid attention to finish quality and edge durability. The boards were laminated to help resist finger marks, light abrasion and surface wear from daily wiping. In a setting like Westdene, that extra protection is worth it. We also checked colour consistency so the branding stayed the same across the exterior sign, menu boards and pavement display.

The fabrication team built the display with a stable base and a neat face frame, while the graphics team made sure the menu text remained legible from a normal standing height. Johan handled the final placement on site, and Lerato coordinated production timing so the pieces arrived in the correct order. Zanele’s layout work kept the type sizes balanced, and Kagiso made sure the vehicle style graphics were not needed here, because the brief was strictly frontage and in store use.

From first survey to final handover, the project took two weeks. That included artwork approval, production, curing time where needed, and installation outside the outlet’s busy trading window.

Installation in a live trading area

Installing signage in a working food business means keeping the area safe and moving quickly. We set up during a quieter period and worked around pedestrian access so customers could still enter the shop. The main sign was levelled carefully to suit the shopfront lines, and the menu boards were positioned at a height that made reading easy without bending or stretching.

We also checked visibility from both directions of approach. Westdene traffic can be stop start, so a sign has to catch the eye from a short distance as much as from across the road. The pavement display was set where it would be seen, but not block the entrance or create a trip risk. Small details like that make a big difference in day to day use, and the client noticed the shop front felt more ordered immediately.

  • Installed with minimal disruption to trading
  • Checked alignment, fixing points and viewing height
  • Adjusted board positions for best street visibility
  • Ensured the pavement unit was stable and easy to move

What changed after the signage went up

The result was a cleaner, more professional frontage that matched the food outlet’s service style. Customers could find the menu faster, staff had a clearer point of sale area, and the pavement display gave them a place to push daily specials without cluttering the doorway. The owners also wanted something that looked good in daylight and did not look tired after a few weeks, and the laminated finish helped with that.

We would approach a similar Westdene cafe job the same way again: start with a proper site survey, keep the message short, use strong contrast, and design for easy maintenance. For an outlet in a busy part of Bloemfontein, signage has to do more than just look nice. It has to work in sunlight, dust, early morning opening rushes and the odd load shedding interruption too. That practical thinking is what keeps the whole package useful long after installation.

Central Signs has been making signs and graphics in Bloemfontein since 2007, and this project was a good example of how a simple brief can still need careful planning. When the front of the business is doing the talking, every board and every line matters.

Questions we get asked

Can you make cafe signage that still works in bright Bloemfontein sun?

Yes. We use strong contrast, proper sizing and protective lamination so the sign stays readable and the finish is easier to clean.

Do menu boards need to be replaced every time prices change?

Not always. We can set them up in sections so pricing and specials can be updated without replacing the full board.

Can you install signs outside trading hours?

Yes, where the site allows it. We often schedule installation around the client’s quieter periods so trade is not interrupted.
