Product Labels

Product labels need to do more than carry a name. They must stick properly, read clearly and hold up to handling, cool rooms and transport without lifting at the corners.

Labels made for packaging that gets handled every day

Central Signs makes custom product labels for packaging, jars, bottles, boxes and short-run items that need a clean, accurate finish. These labels are used on retail stock, promotional packs, food containers, cosmetics, cleaning products, bottled goods and sample packs. If the label has to go onto a curved surface, a cold carton or a box that is opened and closed often, the material and glue have to be matched properly or it will lift, crease or slide.

We work from our Hamilton base in Bloemfontein and supply labels for businesses across Mangaung, Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, Welkom and Kroonstad. For smaller runs, the focus is on neat cutting, consistent colour and good adhesion. For larger runs, repeatability matters most, so each batch matches the last one and your packaging stays consistent on the shelf.

Labels can be supplied as individual cut pieces, on sheets, or in rolls depending on how you apply them. That choice affects speed, wastage and the kind of application method used at your side. For hand application, sheets are often easier. For higher volumes, rolls save time and keep line work moving.

Sizes, shapes and material options that suit your pack

Product labels are not one size fits all. A 30 mm seal for a jar lid behaves very differently from a 120 mm front label on a bottle or a long side panel on a box. We can produce small round, square, rectangular and custom-shaped labels to suit the container and the information that needs to appear on it. If your pack has a curved surface or a narrow shoulder, the label size and corner radius should be planned carefully so it sits flat.

  • Small labels for seals, lids and ingredient tags
  • Medium labels for jars, bottles and retail packs
  • Large labels for box fronts, side panels and bundles
  • Short-run labels for promotions, seasonal stock and test products
  • Variable sets for product ranges with different flavours, sizes or batch codes

Material options can include matt or gloss face stock, clear label stock, removable adhesive and stronger permanent adhesive for packaging that must stay in place. For cooler storage or transport through coastal humidity, the glue and laminate choice becomes important. In hot stock rooms or areas with dust, a tougher finish usually gives better results. We can also include a protective laminate where extra rub resistance is needed, especially on labels that are touched often during packing and dispatch.

Where product labels work best

These labels suit manufacturers, food producers, small batch makers, crafters, resellers and businesses packaging goods for retail or dispatch. They are commonly used on jars, bottles, cartons, pouches, tubes, boxes and shipping packs. They also work well for ingredients, warning labels, batch labels, tamper-evident seals and product identification. If your products are sold at markets, in stores or through direct orders, the label is often the first part of the pack people notice.

Clear labelling helps when your product range changes often. You may need one design for a range of flavours, another for seasonal specials, and a separate batch or expiry label for stock control. We can set up label layouts that leave enough room for barcode fields, net weight, ingredients, directions and legal details without crowding the main branding. If the label is going on glass, plastic or coated board, the surface finish matters as much as the print itself.

For businesses in and around Bloemfontein, labels also need to cope with local conditions. Packaging may travel from dry inland storage to warmer delivery routes or cool room storage, so we look at adhesion, moisture and handling before the job is started. That saves rework later and helps keep your packs looking tidy on the shelf.

Application, line speed and power needs

Most product labels do not need power at the point of use if they are supplied as ready-cut sheets or rolls for hand application. If you want labels applied onto products or packs as part of your production flow, the method depends on the item, the speed required and how often the design changes. For manual application, a flat clean surface and a steady application process are usually enough. For higher volume work, a guided application setup may be needed on your side.

Where heat-shrink, electrical heating or powered print-and-apply equipment is involved, we will discuss the exact requirements before production starts. In many cases, no gas is needed at all. If a customer line uses heat to assist sealing or application, that is assessed separately because label stock, adhesive and temperature all have to work together. Load-shedding can affect production timing, so we plan deliveries and larger repeat runs with that in mind.

  • Confirm if labels will be hand applied or machine applied
  • Tell us whether the pack is glass, plastic, board or metal
  • Share the surface temperature during filling or packing
  • Advise if the product is chilled, frozen or stored in warm conditions
  • Let us know if there is any exposure to moisture, oil or cleaning fluid

Care, storage and label life

Good labels should remain neat from dispatch to the end user, but care starts before they are applied. Keep label rolls or sheets flat, dry and out of direct sun. Dust and damp can weaken the adhesive edge over time, especially on short-run stock that sits in storage for a few weeks before use. If labels are stored in a hot back room or near a washing area, the liner and glue can shift before application.

Once applied, the label should be pressed down evenly, especially around curves and corners. On bottles and jars, give the adhesive enough time to settle before handling or packing into crates. If the product is wiped with cleaning fluid, exposed to cold water or stacked tightly in transit, a tougher laminate may be worth adding. For labels that carry barcodes or small text, clean storage helps keep scanning and reading accurate.

We also assist with maintenance visits for related sign and graphic work where clients want continued support on branded packaging areas, displays or point-of-sale items. If labels are part of a larger display system, keeping the colours and finish consistent across all pieces helps the whole presentation stay professional.

What to check before you place the order

The best label order starts with the right information. If the layout is being revised, we can help with artwork setup and logo redraws, but the more detail you provide upfront, the smoother the process. Check the exact pack size, label area and whether the container has seams, ridges or curves. A label that looks correct on screen can still fail on a bottle shoulder or a box fold if the dimensions are wrong.

  • Final size of the label in millimetres
  • Material of the pack and whether it is flat or curved
  • Quantity needed now and expected repeat order volume
  • Required finish, matt, gloss, clear or laminated
  • Whether the label must be removable or permanent
  • Any legal text, barcode, batch code or expiry space needed

It also helps to know how the product will be packed and stored. If the label is going on a chilled item or something that moves through dusty stock areas, we may suggest a different adhesive or finish. For short runs, turnaround can be kept practical, but last minute changes after print setup can add cost and delay. A clear brief saves money and keeps the order accurate the first time.

Questions we get asked

Can you make labels for both short runs and repeat orders?

Yes. We regularly produce short-run labels for launches, specials and test packs, and we also handle repeat runs where the size and finish must stay consistent.

What if my bottles or jars are curved?

We can size the label to suit curved surfaces and suggest the right material and adhesive so it sits flat and does not lift at the edges.

Do product labels need electricity or gas during installation?

Usually no. Most product labels are supplied ready for hand application or machine use. If your setup needs powered application or heat-assisted sealing, we will confirm the requirements first.
